Community gathers round fires at potjiekos feast

Fires burned bright and pots simmered as families gathered for a lively evening of potjiekos, wine and community spirit at Kerk-in-Suid’s first combined event.

Local church, Kerk-in-Suid (formerly NG Gemeente Wierdapark-Suid) hosted its annual family potjiekos day for the first time, with its wine auction combined.

Members and families of the congregation gathered at the church grounds for an evening of traditional South African food and fun activities.

The Oberholzer family enjoyed the day together.

The strong, cold winds were no match for the roaring fires coming from the three-legged pots, as around 300 guests from far and wide gathered with camp chairs and good company to enjoy over 25 potjies.

Chairman of the church’s council, Johann Le Roux, said that the event served as a fundraiser to help the church construct a coffee shop.

“There’s a whole new change in the community; there are a lot of youngsters who are participating. There’s a lot of action for the kids. Potjies are part of South African tradition, so it’s always good to pass it over to the younger generations as well,” Le Roux said.

Aside from an additional income stream, the coffee shop is said to help the congregation and its guests bond, while upgrading the 45-year-old church.

Le Roux thanked the entire church community and Centurion as a whole for supporting the project.

Kerk-in-Suid looks forward to its upcoming annual family festival in August.
