Two arrested for stealing security beams

Two suspects surrounded and apprehend with four stolen security beams in Centurion.

The swift reaction from a local security company saw two robbers apprehended, after they broke into a business property and stole four security beams last weekend.

Monitor Net received a tip-off of a trespasser in Lyttelton. They deployed a nearby reaction vehicle, which swiftly responded.

“When they arrived at the property a foot chase ensued,” said Monitor Net spokesperson JP le Roux.

Two suspects were apprehended with four stolen beams.

The suspects took the security officers to various premises where beams were stolen from, before they were handed over to police.

Le Roux said the theft of security beams wasn’t a new thing in the area and has been ongoing for years.

He said it seems the suspects steal items on a “shopping list”. They then sell the stolen beams, which usually retails for between R2 000 and R3 000 for about R150 a beam, to either a “buyer” or on the black market.

“It would seem they are only interested in a certain type of beam.”

Le Roux explained, as seen in previous incidents, it takes the robber up to 20 seconds to steal the beam.

“The theft of security beams are a bigger problem than we realise and may form part of a big syndicate.”

Monitor Net has urged the community to come forward and to report stolen security beams to the police.

He said the problem is people don’t report the theft, which makes it difficult to access the crime trend.

“We are working hand-in-hand with the police to investigate the rise in security beam theft.”

Le Roux further said the community was fed up with criminals who break the current lockdown regulations.
