100 homeless to be fed through outreach initiative
Two homeless shelters in Pretoria received a trolley full of non-perishable foods and sanitary and disinfectant products to assist during lockdown.
About 100 people were fed through an initiative that saw customers of a supermarket dig deep into their pockets for a good deed.
Two homeless shelters in Pretoria received a trolley full of non-perishable foods and sanitary and disinfectant products to assist during lockdown.
“Since the start of the national lockdown in March, selected Shoprite and Checkers supermarkets have made donation trolleys available in its stores,” said spokesperson Angelique Wagner.
“Customers are encouraged to donate non-perishable foods and sanitary and disinfectant products.”
She said every time a trolley was full it was donated to shelters, care facilities and other organisations working with vulnerable groups in local communities.
Groceries and other household essentials collected at Checkers Hyper Value Mart were donated to two shelters for homeless people. One situated in Capital Park and the other in Riviera.
“Both shelters are registered beneficiary organisations who also receive donations of surplus food from Checkers Atterbury Value Mart,” said Wagner.
Over 35 households were fed by this initiative and Wagner said more people would benefit.
“Its an ongoing initiative,” she said.
“As each trolley fills up, we give it away to those who need it. The items in the trolley are all based on the needs highlighted to us by the shelter.”
