Correctional services Covid-19 cases climb to 732

Eastern Cape and Western Cape prisons continue to dominate department’s records of Covid-19 cases.

The Department of Correctional Services confirmed that their total number of Covid-19 cases stood at 732 on Monday.

Departmental spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said 256 officials and 476 inmates have contracted the virus thus far.

Eastern Cape and Western Cape prisons continue to dominate the department’s records of Covid-19 cases, with more than 500 cases recorded from these provinces.

Of the new cases Western Cape recorded nine additional cases of officials, whilst Gauteng three of remand detainees (people kept in custody) and Eastern Cape had an additional official case.

Although the cases increase daily, Nxumalo pointed out that the number of recoveries was also growing.

“We also recorded a surge in offender recoveries with 27 offenders in the Western Cape testing negative.
 
“This shows good progress by the team of health care workers in the fight against Covid-19.”

He said the total number of recoveries stood at 170.

On Monday, the department confirmed 719 cases, which means that the total jumped with 13 cases in just a day.

The total provincial breakdown was as follows:

– Eastern Cape: officials 77; inmates 413; recoveries 72

– Western Cape: officials 164; inmates 51; recoveries 86

– Limpopo: officials 2; recovery 1

– Gauteng: officials 7; inmates 12; recovery 10

– Northern Cape: official 2

– Free State: official 1

– KwaZulu-Natal: officials 2

– Department’s head office: official 1; recovery 1
