Pretoria hospital staffer tests positive for Covid-19

As a precautionary measure the hospital said all medical staff and colleagues who were potentially exposed were self-isolating and would be screened for the virus.

A staff member at the Zuid-Afrikaans hospital in the east of Pretoria tested positive for the Covid-19 virus, the hospital confirmed on Monday.

In a statement, the hospital said the staff member’s results were made available on Sunday.

“The employee is in self-isolation at home and is not severely ill,” the statement read.

“The staff member followed and applied the controls required by employees for Covid-19 symptoms.”

As a precautionary measure, the hospital said all medical staff and colleagues who were potentially exposed were self-isolating and would be screened for Covid-19.

It said deep cleaning and hydrogen peroxide vapour would be done, according to the Department of Health’s infection control standards.

“The area affected is an isolated area.

“Screening protocols are managed by our emergency department Covid-19 Team. Contact tracing is currently being conducted.”

The hospital said it had implemented strict infection prevention guidelines since the declaration of the pandemic to protect the health and safety of staff and patients.

The hospital will remain open.

“Zuid-Afrikaans hospital is committed to the health and safety of our patients.”
