Putco buses get cameras to ensure adherence to regulations

The cameras would allow them to monitor adherence to social distancing guidelines.

Putco buses will be outfitted with onboard cameras to ensure commuters’ adherence to Covid-19 regulations, the company says.

The cameras will be installed in conjunction with fleet-management organisation Netstar.

“What their hardware and software technology allows us to do is incredible,” said Putco group operations executive Jack Sekwaila.

“It gives us peace of mind so we can focus on moving people safely during the lockdown, on a daily basis.”

The network of onboard cameras would allow them to monitor adherence to social distancing guidelines, check that drivers and passengers were wearing masks and that passengers were sanitised when boarding the bus, along with improving road safety performance.

“Netstar is more than just our tracking and technology partner,” said Sekwaila.

He said Putco’s partnership with Netstar began after a series of fatal accidents along the Gauteng and Mpumalanga stretch of the Moloto road.

Netstar MD Pierre Bruwer said their telematics and fleet intelligence monitoring services allowed Putco to check that passengers and staff were adhering to all hygiene and lockdown protocols during the pandemic.

“We have been able to save lives on the roads using telematics. We are certain we can continue doing that by ensuring Covid-19 compliance,” he said.

Bruwer said they had not only installed fleet-management cameras, but also fuel-monitoring systems and driver behaviour monitoring systems across the fleet as well since the beginning of the partnership.

“This enabled Putco to track data on harsh braking accelerations, which has helped to encourage best practice through training,” he said.

He added that the technology-driven, enhanced safety protocols introduced by the company had seen accidents being reduced by 70% and damage claims by 36%.
