Moot community still helping the needy

“The Moot has been standing together through this time and has come through in numbers to assist those in need”

Local organisations and residents are still doing what they can to help those in need during the national lockdown.

“The Moot has been standing together through this time and has come through in numbers to assist those in need,” said Ancelize van der Kooi of Kilnerpark Security.

“It is an amazing thing to witness how everyone was standing together.”

The security company has been part of a group of people and organisations working tirelessly since the start of the lockdown to assist the less fortunate by handing out food parcels.

“At the moment we are distributing our biggest parcels on Tuesdays, where we aim to distribute between 100 and 200 parcels,” she said.

“However, the number to whom we distribute changes weekly as the need arises.”

She said when a parcel needed to be urgently distributed to a family, they made their vehicles available for the purpose.

Van der Kooi said this project was very close to their hearts.

“The Covid-19 pandemic along with the lockdown really hit residents hard, with some people not getting an income at all,” she said.

“I really feel that the community stood together through this time and is still standing together to help people struggling.

“The community showed they care by helping where they can with what they have.”

Van der Kooi said they would continue with the project throughout level 3.

“We realise that not all people will return to work under level 3, which means that the need is still there,” she said.

“As far as we can, we will help them.”

Van der Kooi said, however, that for them to be able to help, they needed help and donations from the community.

Anyone who wanted to help, should contact Kilnerpark Security.

Former ward councillor Elmarie Linde previously explained the project was started when the lockdown was first announced in March.

“An emergency group was established. We realised almost immediately that some problems will arise,” she said.

“These include a shortage of food and other necessities, as well as medical assistance.”

Linde said after they realised this, they gathered community leaders, including AfriForum, ward councillors, religious leaders, police stations and security companies.

“Everyone started advertising and sending out messages on social media,” she said.

“From there on it just spread like a wildfire.”

Linde previously explained before that food parcels are delivered to a family after it was assessed whether they were really in need.

“Most people that asked for help really needed it, but there have been a couple of cases where residents took chances,” she said.

“We want to help those that really need it.”
