Community turns e-waste into much-needed funds

Residents dropped off old electronics and appliances during Saturday’s e-waste recycling event, helping reduce environmental waste while raising funds for Sun Gardens Hospice.

Residents turned out in support of an e-waste recycling event hosted on Saturday by local DA councillors.

The event was held at NG Kerk Elarduspark, where residents could drop off items throughout the day.

Community members came to dispose of unwanted electronic waste and unused appliances in an environmentally friendly manner.

Ward councillor Lida Erasmus said the initiative was created to help residents safely get rid of e-waste that often accumulates in homes.

“Many people have e-waste at home, and this event gives them an opportunity to recycle it responsibly,” said Erasmus.

She explained that some appliances still in good working condition are donated directly to Sun Gardens Hospice.

“Working appliances, except cellphones, are donated to Sun Gardens,” she said.

The recycling initiative also serves as a fundraiser for the hospice through a company that processes the electronic waste.

“We raise money through a company that recycles e-waste. They pay directly to Sun Gardens, so we do not handle the money ourselves,” Erasmus explained.

According to Erasmus, previous e-waste events have already made a meaningful contribution to the hospice.

“At a previous event, we raised almost R17 000 for Sun Gardens,” she said.

Erasmus said the goal of the initiative is to reduce electronic waste in the community while also giving back to an organisation that provides essential care and support to patients and families.
