Donating for change

Second Chance NPO and partners donated women’s clothing, snacks for children, 25 sanitary pad packs, grocery packs consisting of maize meal, oil, rice, canned foods and toiletries.

A local organisation recently donated essentials on Monday, 1 June, to an informal settlement in Struben Street, Pretoria Central.

Second Chance NPO and partners donated women’s clothing, snacks for children, 25 sanitary pad packs, grocery packs consisting of maize meal, oil, rice, canned foods and toiletries.

Boitumelo Thakge (24), founded Second Chance the NPO with team members Nomthandazo Ndlovu (26) and Lerato Masubelele (27), Asemahle Zilindile (23) and Dineo Sekele (22).

Thakge said they run feeding programmes to feed the homeless and poor families.

“The reason I started doing this is because I want to see an end to poverty. I believe in the empowerment of our people. Empowerment needs to start somewhere,” Thakge said.

“We also run mentorship programmes for high school students.”

Sekele said the donations were made to the majority of men, and about 50 women and children.

NPO member Ndlovu said members contribute every month.

“But sometimes it is difficult to keep up because we are students. We thrive to stay consistent and not to give up on those people who have found a home as a second chance,” she said.

Thakge said four TUT students volunteered to help in the recent project.

“A businessowner from Centurion assisted us with the food parcels. We made the soup yesterday through the donations that were sent to the NPO account and we also delivered clothes for women,” Thakge said.

“Our NPO receives different donations and welcomes any type of donations that would help such as clothing, food, grocery packs and toiletries.
