Food relief for less fortunate families

Last month, another Pretoria resident surprised Mamelodi residents by providing them with 500 handmade masks to protect them from the Covid-19 virus.

Locals are doing their part to help the needy and less fortunate in Mamelodi during the lockdown period.

Recently, Mamelodi businessmen together with the Mams Bike Club decided to lend a helping hand.

They formed an organisation aimed at reaching out to families who don’t have food.

On Saturday, the organisation donated 100 food parcels and also “adopted” a family in Nellmapius.

Spokesperson Peace Maroga said they were not only assisting with food.

“The organisation also makes sure they uplift the spirit of the less fortunate families. We want to help them to get on their feet and find jobs,” said Maroga.

He said the “adopted” family had no electricity for almost two years. No one in the family was working.

Maroga said they heard about the family while donating food parcels.

“The father’s income is dependent on temporary jobs, which are becoming scarcer. The family was forced to go to bed hungry.”

The daughter in the family was also not able to fulfill her dream of becoming a nurse.

“We are planning to assist the family wherever we can and help the daughter to find a job.”

The main aim of this new Mamelodi Covid-19 organisation is to help locals fend for themselves.

“We are working closely with different departments and contractors to help find jobs for these less fortunate families.”

He added that they also encouraged residents to always stay safe at home and wash their hands regularly.

Maroga said they would continue serving the public even after lockdown.

“We are planning to donate more food parcels to Mamelodi and Nellmapius residents in the coming weeks.”

Last month, another Pretoria resident surprised Mamelodi residents by providing them with 500 handmade masks to protect them from the Covid-19 virus.

Ophelia Onibon, owner of Sleek Afrik, said she was inspired to make masks for the residents because many of her staff were staying in Mamelodi.

Onibon has no affiliation to the new Mamelodi Covid-19 organisation.

“I designed and made the masks myself and then handed them out to families in the area on Saturday morning,” she said.

“Because the masks needed to be washed every day for safety, I provided each resident with two masks, free of charge.

“Our goal is not only to provide 3 000 masks to the residents, but also to help them with food.”
