Protest continues at Pretoria Girls High School

A group of learners are sitting outside a classroom as a form of protest while continuing with their school work as they call for their demands to be met.

A protest demanding an end to racial discrimination that saw learners boycotting classes at Pretoria Girls High School on Thursday continued on Friday.

The protest was allegedly sparked by the principal’s call for learners to wear black clothes in honour of Black Lives Matter, which the learners claimed was “a false call”.

The learners claimed there were racial inequalities at the school since 2016 and nothing had been done to resolve those issues.

One matric learner and activist who spoke to Rekord but did not want to be named said learners were holding a peaceful protest and were also helping one other with school work.

“Teachers are refusing to attend to us so we have brought textbooks so that we can help each other out,” she said.

A prompt meeting between learners, the SGB and the education department was held at the school on Friday to discuss all the grievances that were raised.

“Responses to some of the issues that were raised at the school were given in a meeting,” said Gauteng Department of Education spokesperson, Steve Mabona.

Mabona said some issues would be responded to by Wednesday.
