Pretoria bikers bring soup, blankets to the needy
On Saturday, 250 bikers distributed about 500 blankets and 700 containers of soup ingredients.
A new charity initiative in Pretoria hopes to make this cold winter a little more bearable for the needy.
On Saturday, 20 June, Solidarity Helping Hand’s Pretoria East branch launched its Snoesige-sop-kombersrit (Cuddly soup blanket ride).
The launch took place at the Solidarity head office in Kloofsig, Centurion.
The initiative seeks to gather donations of winters clothing, blankets and soup ingredients, all of which are often in high demand in winter.
Organisers feel the initiative will meet the need for these items at various local old age homes, childrens’ homes and for individual families who are struggling.
On Saturday, the Helping Hand motorcycle club, as well as the Proudly Meerkat, Bombshelter Biker Church and the Pretoria Biker Council clubs, joined in on the initiative.
250 bikers distributed about 500 blankets and 700 containers of soup ingredients.
“You can have lots of blankets in your home and closet but you forget their value until you don’t have them,” said Hannes Noëth, CEO of Solidarity Helping Hand.
“Providing those in need with warm blankets and clothes is more than just driving away the cold.
“It gives hope to those who are hopeless, especially in these trying times.”
Dr Dirk Hermann, CEO of trade union Solidarity, believes the current Covid-19 pandemic means more people are struggling and cannot meet with their loved ones.
“During these times, the beauty in people comes out,” said Hermann.
“This is a period of caring and reaching out to one another. The initiative is one such opportunity to reach out to others and make sure they are taken care of.”
Isabel Böning, regional organiser of Solidarity Helping Hand Pretoria East region, said: “we can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone”.
“Through this project, we hope to make winter a little easier, bearable and warmer.”
