Centurion man missing for six months

"We are planning to go to mortuaries in the Lyttelton area later this week."

The mysterious disappearance of Betholomeus Henry Eiberg (27) has reached the six-month mark. Since 19 December 2019, neither family nor friends have heard or seen Eiberg since he went missing. No transactions have been made on his bank account either.

Sister Chantal Anneen Singh said the police has made no contact with the family whatsoever or gave any information about his whereabouts.

A detective, who Singh does not want to make known as she wants to protect his identity, said that the family’s best option is to phone mortuaries in an attempt to find her brother.

“We are planning to go to mortuaries in the Lyttelton area later this week,” said Singh.

At the end of January a close friend of Eiberg, Chantelle Stander, thought she spotted him in Bedfordview in western Ekurhuleni. She, however, had mistaken Eiberg with someone else.

“Chantelle said she approached the man but he just ignored her. She said this man looked exactly like Henry. My husband and I jumped in the car and rushed to Bedfordview with the hopes that he might actually be Henry. We asked around if anyone might have seen him, but no luck.”

Singh said that her family was at their wit’s end.

“We have received reports from community members that my brother was arrested at Jeppe police station. Someone even phoned and said Henry is currently at Johannesburg correctional centre.”

“We drove through to go and see whether it was indeed Henry, but unfortunately it was not. We have been through a lot over the past few months. Is it his way of handling tough times? It is just not like Henry to simply pack his bags and leave without saying a word to anyone.”

Singh said the family was unsure whether the passing of their father in 2019 and their mother, whose leg had to be amputated following a hit-and-run accident, might have prompted his disappearance.

“These events have gotten the better of him, but my brother never seemed depressed or lonely.”

Sleepless nights are, however, not an option anymore.

“We will not lose hope or faith. We will keep on praying for Henry to come back home. My mother avoids the subject. She never speaks about it. Whenever she does, she will just say ‘today Henry has been missing for five months’. That is it. I can see my mother is in a bad space.”

At the time of his disappearance on 19 December he was wearing 3/4 pants, a blue shirt, black jacket and black safety shoes.

Shortly after his disappearance, the family reported him as missing at the Alberton police station. The report was sent to SAPS Lyttelton. The missing 27-year-old has visible marks on his forehead, which he sustained due to a motorcycle accident. He has no piercings or tattoos. Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela, has yet to respond for comment at the time of going to print.
