Tshwane has third-most Covid-19 cases in province
“We are seeing an expected surge that is yet to peak.”
Tshwane has the third-most Covid-19 cases in the province, sitting at 36% of overall cases.
This was according to the latest Gauteng command council weekly report delivered on Thursday.
Based on Wednesday’s statistics, Gauteng remained the second-highest province in the country with 26 126 confirmed Covid-19 cases, according to Gauteng health MEC Dr Bandile Masuku.
“We are seeing an expected surge that is yet to peak,” said Masuku.
“This is particularly due to the moving down of the lockdown levels with increased activity.
“We are worried about the active cases as the number of recoveries is slowing down, and we are putting health measures in place to try and slow down the infection rate.”
Johannesburg was the region with the highest number of positive cases at 12 892, with 3 670 recoveries and 80 deaths.
Ekhuruleni was the second highest with 5 377 cases and 1 335 recoveries and 20 deaths.
Tshwane took the number three spot with 4 059 cases and 972 recoveries and 10 deaths.
Most cases were reported in Atteridgeville, Laudium, Pretoria CBD, Hercules, Danville, Saulsville, Lotus and Pretoria West.
Masuku said the department was beefing up health measures responding to the rise as more than 2 000 health staffers were deployed to assist in the Covid-19 fight.
Beds available at health hospitals in Pretoria stood at 1 970 while the province had 8 301.
“For June and July, we are not anticipating any shortage of beds. We are adding field hospitals that will also add to our capacity. The hospitals will only cater to those not in critical conditions but who need health care.
“It is important as a society to limit the number of unnecessary activities. We are seeing people organising parties and gatherings. That is something we totally discourage.”
About 65 293 vulnerable people such as the elderly, chronic patients and pregnant woman among others have received flu immunization.
Masuku also indicated that the province was experiencing a backlog of 30 000 backlogs in cases.
“We are engaging with the national health laboratories and we will be sorting this out by next week.”
