Magnolia Dell gets much needed facelift

"Every single individual in our city can make a positive impact if they put their mind to it. It all depends on you as an individual on what type of impact you really are determined to make.”

The Magnolia Dell park was given a much-needed facelift when volunteers from a local garden service cleaned it up on Monday.

Active resident and owner of the Chore Shop, Tony Fernandez and staff members, Hendrik, Thato, Fannie and Sunnyboy cut grass and picked up litter at the park.

Fernandez said he heeded ward councillor Shaun Wilkinson’s call to clean up the parks.

“It is not in my area, but I took a few of my staff members and used our spare Monday to do some service to the community,” he said.

“Every single individual in our city can make a positive impact if they put their mind to it. It all depends on you as an individual on what type of impact you really are determined to make.”

Fernandez said he was inspired by Wilkinson’s constant willingness to improve communities and his positive attitude.

He said more needed to be done to give councillors support in ensuring that communities were happy with their surroundings.

“A councillor is as good as the help he gets from the community,” he said.

“Maybe these actions and efforts of my team will inspire others to take action and make the biggest positive impact in their communities so that others can also help in the effort to revive and revitalise these open spaces and parks.”

With Covid-19 having taken a toll on his gardening business based in the north of Pretoria, Fernandez said there was much-needed positivity and upliftment in the community.

The owner of the Huckleberry restaurant situated at the park said he was very grateful for the initiative taken by the team.

“The park was in a terrible state. The grass was extremely long and there was a whole lot of litter and this was specifically around where the restaurant is located,” said Dylan Brewer.

“A lot of people do not realise the maintenance that has to go into maintaining a park that size. I must commend Tony’s team and Shaun for the work done. As a member of the community, I really appreciate it.”

He said the park was one of the major drawing cards for the restaurant and even though they had not opened for sit-down services, the clean-up would go a long way in attracting more people to the park.

Wilkinson said this initiative like many others in the ward, was meant to encourage active citizenry in the community.

He commended the team of six for the job well done.

“Your efforts and inspiration will surely spur on others to make a contribution to society and to their communities.”
