Gauteng police round up various suspects in the province
“The police recovered personal protective equipment and three crates full of cellphones."
The Gauteng government has urged law enforcement agencies in the province to continue to deal hard with criminal elements wreaking havoc among communities as scores of suspects were arrested at the weekend.
Among the suspects was a 36-year-old man arrested on Friday evening, in Ga-Rankuwa for allegedly terrorising and threatening the community of Brits.
He was alleged to have extorted money from building contractors carrying out development work in the area.
“His modus operandi is to threaten the rightful contractors at various sites by firing shots during the execution of construction work,” said Gauteng safety department spokesperson Ofentse Morwana.

Morwana said during his arrest, various law enforcement officers recovered a shotgun, an R5 rifle with 14 live rounds and one R5 magazine in his possession.
“The suspect has been detained at Ga-Rankuwa police station and will face charges relating to unlawful possession of firearms.
“According to preliminary information he is also facing murder charges.”
Morwana said private security officers also arrested three suspects at Woodlands Mall, Pretoria east after an attempted robbery at American Swiss jewellery outlet at the weekend.
Meanwhile, nine alleged speedsters were arrested by the Gauteng traffic police with a motorist held for the highest recorded speed in Bronkhorstspruit after being found driving at 207km/h in a 120 km/h zone.
“All speedsters were detained at various police stations. They are expected to appear in various magistrate’s courts to face charges related to reckless and negligent driving as well as exceeding prescribed maximum limit.”

Meanwhile, five suspects arrested for an attempted heist at OR Tambo International Airport on Saturday, have appeared in the Kempton Park magistrate’s court.
Morwana said police and the airport security responded to calls that a heist was underway at the cargo section of the airport.
“The police recovered personal protective equipment and three crates full of cellphones.
“The police together with the private security industry have been busy in the province ridding our communities of crime such as cash-in-transit heists, car hijackings and more.”
Morwana said a lot more work still needed to be done by the law enforcement agencies to create safer communities in the province.
