Local animal shelter asks for urgent help

"The need just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. More and more animals are being brought in daily."

An animal shelter in the north has appealed for help from the community to make ends meet as the effects of the national lockdown are beginning to be felt.

“We are still up and running and, in fact, working harder and more positive than ever; however, the shelters are starting to suffer. I see it here at Wollies,” said founder Cilla Trexler.

“Although we are positive, we are going through a difficult time. Many animals are given up, so many households are unable to feed their animals and instead of them having to give up their animals, we are trying to help with food that is putting a bit of more strain on us and, of course, our food supply.”

Trexler said initially, Wollies had many fun fundraising events planned, but due to the Covid-19 epidemic, they had to be cancelled.

“As you can imagine, this has led to a severe shortage in our resources. We are running very low on cat and dog food supplies. It is a crisis.”

Trexler said although they were receiving dog and cat food ‘here and there’, the need was simply too great to keep up.

“The need just keeps on getting bigger and bigger. More and more animals are being brought in daily. I am starting to stress, not just for the animals but also for the needy in the community.”

Wollies has teamed up with Afrikaans singer Anton Goosen via a social media concert, Together apart for Wollies, in an effort to raise much-needed funds for the shelter.

“In light of the postponement of the Sleepathon Challenge 2020 due to Covid-19, Wollies will not be receiving the funds we normally raise through this event – important funds that help us achieve our vision of giving all animals a second chance for a good life.”

“We are therefore extremely pleased to announce that Anton Goosen, with his big heart and love for animals, is hosting an online event via YouTube in aid of Wollies Animal Shelter in September.”

Trexler thanked the community for their support.

“Thank you, especially considering the current conditions we all face. We understand completely, however, it does not lessen the need for food towards our many animals currently at the shelter.”
