Local women stand together to fight Covid-19

“We are educating our communities about the deadly disease and want to make sure they are always complying to lockdown regulations.”

A group of Mamelodi women conducted a door-to-door campaign aimed at raising awareness about Covid-19.

The fearless women from Marry Me informal settlement in Mamelodi East wanted to make sure residents adhered to the rules and regulation of the lockdown.

The Vhathu Phanda initiative works hand-in-hand with the Mamelodi East police station.

The project was started early in July.

These ladies meet daily at a local taxi rank.

Boitumelo Mashakeng encouraged residents to put a sign at their gate saying “no mask, no entry” and to put informative signs in bathrooms urging proper hygiene.

Mashakeng said they also visited spaza shops to make sure they were compliant too.

“We encourage the community to wash their hands at all times,” said Mashakeng.

Mashakeng concluded that they wanted to make sure their community was fully aware of Covid-19, especially those who didn’t have access to internet or who didn’t own televisions.

Ernest Mogane of the Vhathu Phanda community organisation said the initiative was started because the ladies saw that many people in the township didn’t comply with the lockdown regulations.

“We have seen many people not wearing a mask, and do not adhere to social distancing. We believe most of them don’t wash or sanitise their hands and we were afraid they might contract and spread Covid-19,” said Mogane.

“We are educating our communities about the deadly disease and want to make sure they are always complying to lockdown regulations.”

The organisation is pleading with business people, government, and the community for more donations of PPE, sanitisers, masks and reflectors.
