Man caught with alcohol and cigarettes among 190 arrested in Pretoria

On Thursday morning, Tshwane district police, together with other law enforcement agencies held roadblocks in Silverton and Mamelodi respectively where hundreds of vehicles were searched.

A man caught with alcohol and illegal cigarettes was among the 190 people arrested this week in Pretoria during Operation Okae Molao.

On Thursday morning, Tshwane district police, together with other law enforcement agencies held roadblocks in Silverton and Mamelodi respectively where hundreds of vehicles were searched.

In Mamelodi, a man was arrested for possession of alcohol and illegal cigarettes on Solomon Mahlangu Drive.

“The suspect saw the roadblock and tried to make a U-turn to evade police. He was chased, stopped and searched where illegal cigarettes and alcohol were found in his vehicle. He was arrested and taken to the Mamelodi East police station,” said police spokesperson Major General Hilda Mohajane.

She said the objective of the operation was to root out corruption, maintain law and order and to enforce compliance to Covid-19 regulations.

The multi-disciplinary operation was initiated by the Gauteng premier David Makhura and is led by the Gauteng provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela.

“We started last night with the tracing of suspects which led to the arrest of 188 suspects for different crimes ranging from assault to murder. Those suspects will be appearing in different courts across Tshwane,” Mohajane said.

“We appeal to communities to partner with us as law enforcement by staying at home.”

Mohajane said next month’s operation would focus mainly on gender-based violence.

“As you know August is women’s month, we are embarking on women-led operations across the province.”
