Local disability organisation feeds the hungry

Residents at both flats said they don’t have any water and electricity since they are still waiting for the Tshwane metro to finish their toilets and installing electricity.

A local organisation recently donated food parcels to residents of extension 5 flats in Mamelodi.

Ernest Furumele, the founder of the Rehoboth Rapture organisation, said the donations were made possible thanks to the Thandanani Drop Inn Centre, which is committed to providing and helping needy families in the area.

Residents received food parcels and sanitary pads. About 130 children from extension 22 were also provided with freshly cooked meals.

“Thandanani Drop Inn helped with donations of chicken, mealie meal, cooking oil, a box of Royco soup and 100 bottles of Aquelle flavoured water,” said Furumele.

Rehoboth Rapture, which usually helps people with disabilities, was able to cook the meals for the children with items donated by Thandanani centre.

Other residents at the flats also made a contribution of R1 200 out of their own pockets in addition to an extra donation of sanitary pads to the young ladies residing at both flats.

Furumele said the organisers spent the rest of the day playing games and singing with the children residing at the flats.

“After spending a day with the children, we decided to surprise the little ones with food packs,” he said.

Residents at both flats said they don’t have any water and electricity since they are still waiting for the Tshwane metro to finish their toilets and installing electricity.

“The residents had been staying there for a couple of months without the necessary service delivery,” said Furumele.

“We decided to spend a day and cook for the residents because we wanted to plough back to the community especially needy families in Mamelodi,” he said.

Furumele, who is physically challenged, told residents not to give up in life just because they don’t have any electricity and running water.

Thandanani Drop Inn Centre further went out to hand out food to needy families elsewhere around Mamelodi as well as hotspots for drug users and the homeless.

Furumele pleaded with local businessmen to come on board because he believes that they could do more with donations and food parcels to feed even more families.
