AfriForum volunteers tackle Centurion pothole

“Thank you so much for all the hoots and thumbs-up from the friendly residents who displayed their joy exuberantly in passing.”

Centurion residents have reason to smile after one of the biggest local headaches, the so-called “big hole” in Eldoraigne, was finally fixed by AfriForum volunteers recently.

On 1 August, AfriForum’s newly established Centurion branch chairman, Andre de Bruyn and a group of volunteers met in Saxby Avenue to repair the dangerous pothole in the street.

The Centurion branch recently opened on 8 July this year.

“We had to get to work as soon as possible. There were so many complaints about the pothole in Saxby Avenue,” De Bruyn explained.

He said the pothole was not only dangerous but a liability to motorists’ vehicles damaged by the pothole.

“Motorists have to swerve out into oncoming traffic to avoid the pothole or risk driving through it. To drive through that pothole is a guaranteed flat tyre or worse damage to your vehicle.”

De Bruyn said they got quotes to repair the pothole and with the necessary approval from the metro and funds from the community, it could be repaired.

“We want to repair more potholes.

“Centurion is in a complete state by the looks of the potholes, the neglected parks and other issues.”

He said other complaints in the areas include dirty water, illegal dumping in parks and fields.

De Bruyn has invited the Centurion community to join the branch’s Telegraph account with smart features that enables residents to report complaints directly to the AfriForum’s control room.

“The app is free and residents can log into the app, give the location of the complaint and upload a photo.”

De Bruyn said they have reached a point where they can no longer wait for the metro, and has decided to take action by repairing the complaints themselves if the budget, however, allows it.

“Thank you so much for all the hoots and thumbs-up from the friendly residents who displayed their joy in passing by.”

De Bruyn said he only realised what a big difference the repairing of the pothole made for the community when he saw how positively they responded on Friday while they were busy working on the road.
