Carjacking shows alarming rise in Mamelodi
Mamelodi appeared to be in almost every list of top 30 police stations where serious crimes were reported.
Driving in Mamelodi is not very safe for motorists, if the latest crime statistics are anything to go by.
This as carjacking in the area has increased by 67.9% from 137 to 230 cases – 93 more cases than the previous year.
The statistics, released by police minister Bheki Cele last week Friday, cover the period between 1 April 2019 and 30 March, excluding the current lockdown period.
Mamelodi appeared to be in almost every list of top 30 police stations where serious crimes were reported.
Another alarming crime is so-called “trio crimes” (house robbery, business robbery and vehicle hijacking) which increased by 38%, with 274 to 378 cases with 104 more cases reported.

Contact crimes (which include rape, assault, or robbery in which the victim is the target) also rose by 10% to 3 195 cases.
Common assault has increased by 13%, robbery with aggravating circumstances 15.8%, grievous bodily harm went up by 2% and robbery at non-residential places increased by 6.2%.
Kidnapping decreased by 25%, while rape cases also showed a 6.3% decrease and arson went down 29%.
Mamelodi East CPF chairperson Eddie Mnguni said the precinct lacked the manpower and resources to fight crime.
He said it was the responsibility of everyone to help fight crime.
“The community needs to join forces with the police and CPF to fight crime,” said Mnguni.
“Another challenge in Mamelodi is that we have so many informal settlements, especially in the far east of Mamelodi. Most of these crimes occur in those areas.”
He encouraged parents to not tolerate criminal activity in their homes and that visible and effective policing should be the order of the day.
“Mamelodi East police station needs more officers and the community also need to come up with structures that will help fight crime.

“The community needs the police to fight crime and the police also needs to the community to fight crime,” he said.
He pleaded with the youth, especially those who were not employed, to join the CPF in their different wards and help fight crime.
Mnguni encouraged the public to report any crimes by calling 08600-10111.
