East mum recovering after a freak accident

She was opening the gate when her vehicle’s handbrake allegedly failed, causing the vehicle to roll forward and pin her against the gate.

A Pretoria East mother is currently recovering in hospital after she got pinned between her car and a gate on Monday.

She was opening the gate when her vehicle’s handbrake allegedly failed, causing the vehicle to roll forward and pin her against the gate.

Speaking to Rekord on Wednesday, the mother of one from Elardus Park said she was grateful that she managed to “pull herself out” to avoid further injury to her leg.

“I remember pulling the handbrake up, but left the engine running because I was in a rush. As I was opening the gate, my car rolled forward and pinned me against the gate; I was briefly trapped, but managed to lift the gate and escape,” she said.

“I didn’t even notice my left leg was cut until a few minutes later when medics arrived at the scene,” she said.

The 38-year-old woman, who wanted to stay anonymous, told Rekord she underwent surgery on Tuesday.

“I am still in hospital and hopefully I will be discharged tomorrow. I have a deep cut in my left leg, but it could have been much worse,” she said.

She urged motorists to always ensure their handbrakes are in good condition.

Vemru and Netcare 911 paramedics managed to stabilise the woman at the scene of the accident.

Due to the nature of her injuries, a Netcare helicopter ambulance airlifted her to a specialist facility for further treatment.
