Matrics back to finish their academic year
Local schools report smooth reopening of school after a short break.
Schools in the north of Pretoria reported a smooth reopening this Monday as matrics returned to finish their matric year after a short break due to Covid-19.
Montana Hoërskool reported that only a few learners were absent on Monday.
“The revised school calendar was easily accepted because the learners and teachers worked hard to stay up to date with the syllabus and, therefore, do not see any problem in finishing the rest of the work before the start of the preliminary examination,” said Montana Hoërskool deputy head Marietta du Plooy.
Wonderboom High School, on Monday, reported that about 93% of matrics were back.
The school’s body corporate chairman Leon Langenhoven said the matrics had completed most of their schoolwork.

“We are ready to receive other learners; schedules have been adjusted and newsletters sent out with the necessary info. All the necessary virus measures are in place.”
Eldoraigne High School spokesperson Annalien Venter said the school was forging on well with studies.
“We were able to finish a lot of work through having half of the learners at school and others having direct online learning.
“The school divided into two groups accordingly, and each group has a time table for contact and also online team learning. Learners at home connected to the classroom through Microsoft teams.”
Venter said the school assisted pupils who did not have the hardware for online learning and chipped in with data.
Uitsig High School spokesperson Manda Bester said the school recorded a grade 12 attendance of 93%.
Bester said the school management was confident they would complete the school curriculum despite a cut in the academic year over the past few months.
“Grade 12 learners were working very hard for the past seven weeks. We had extended school hours and both learners and staff deserved a break.
“We acquired enough personal protective equipment (PPE) and disinfectant and have our screening process in place,” she said.
Pretoria Central High school principal Thomas Hlongwane said the school was even ready for the grades to be phased in.
“We are very happy with the reopening. Kids are much safer at schools. Attendance was good and we believe that there would be enough time for matrics to finish the syllabus.”

Hlongwane, however, said he was worried that other grades might not finish their school curriculum on time.
The Department of Basic Education gazetted directions outlining the phasing in of grades over the next month.
The next grade to be phased at schools according to the adjusted calendar would be the grade 7 on 11 August.
Ramaphosa announced the closure of schools for four weeks, following calls from teacher unions for school to close during the Covid-19 peak.
