North family continues probe into son’s ‘mysterious’ death

“What's mysterious is that the bike was found about 800m from where Josh’s body was found.”

The family of a young man, whose body was found lying next to a road in the Sinoville area last year, is continuing the probe into his “mysterious” death.

Joshua Wyngaardt’s brother Darius said a private investigation was ongoing to look into the death of an “apparent motorcycle accident”.

“It’s become very apparent that it wasn’t, at least not clearly, a motorcycle accident,” Darius said.

It has been 10 months since the 24-year-old man’s death.

The family initially took to social media after Wyngaardt failed to arrive home in the Moot.

He had been riding his brother’s silver Yamaha motorcycle from the east of Pretoria.

In a video, taken in Joshua’s bedroom, Darius appealed with anyone who had seen anything or knew something to share it so they could get to the bottom of what happened and get closure.

Darius also shared details of where Joshua was last seen on e-toll gantry cameras along the N1 highway in the east of Pretoria around 03:00 on 29 September.

“Just before 04:00 north of the Zambesi off-ramp, the bike is found abandoned in neutral after a supposed type of accident and Josh’s body is nowhere to be found at that time.”

His body was found hours later by a pedestrian who was walking near the highway, near Breed Street.

“There’s a lot that’s been mysterious about this because the bike was found about 800m from where Josh’s body was found,” the emotional brother said, adding that there was “very little” damage to it.

“Those of you who ride a bike will know for the bike to be in neutral in an accident is nearly impossible if you are travelling at a speed.”

Darius further revealed his brother’s jacket was found with cut marks, but with little blood and that his helmet was shattered.

“There appears to be some form of malicious intent,” Darius said.

He added there had been an altercation at a restaurant where Joshua had been riding home from.

“His bag was also missing,” he said.

Darius noted they were trying to piece together what could have happened to his brother between the time he was caught on camera on the highway and the time when the reported accident happened.

The young man’s distraught mother Wendy said: “Joshua was my son and he had so much to live for.

“People must ask themselves where their spouses, partners, brothers, sons on that night were – someone must know something.

“Someone committed a crime on that night,” she said.

Wendy also said the whole family was still shattered by his untimely passing.

Joshua would have celebrated his 25th birthday on 26 July.

Police spokesperson Warrant Office Johan Van Dyk said they were still awaiting post-mortem results.

He previously told Rekord that the Sinoville police were appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

At the time, Van Dyk said: “The approximate time of the incident is estimated between 11:45 and 12:30.”
