Cops warn residents to be careful when withdrawing money

Warning comes after two recent incidents involving elderly men withdrawing money from ATMs in Soshanguve went missing.

Rietgat police have warned residents, especially the elderly, to be careful when withdrawing money from ATMs around Soshanguve.

The warning comes two weeks after an elderly man from Soshanguve Block GG was allegedly kidnapped and found murder in a veld in Mogogelo.

This week, an elderly man from Soshanguve was found alive in the same area after he went missing after going to the bank.

He was taken to Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal for treatment.

“[The two cases] form an integral part of our investigation to determine whether there could be a syndicate [at work targeting elderly men] or not, but for now we cannot divulge the details of our investigation,” said Captain Stephen Maluleka.

“They are of a pension age, but we cannot confirm if they are being targeted for their pension grant or their retirement packages,” he said.

“People go missing every day, sometimes it is girlfriends who visit their boyfriends without telling their families, while others get kidnapped for various reasons, while some just get lost around the township because of their mental instability. So it happens all the time.”

Maluleka said he could not say there was a specific area where residents were targeted.

“There is no specific area in Soshanguve where people go missing; it depends on different circumstances where these people are, and what they were doing wherever they are that influences their disappearance.”

Maluleka said he would, however, discourage the community from withdrawing large sums of money from ATMs.

He said people using ATMs should not ask strangers for help and instead ask trusted relatives to help with electronic banking.

“Also, look around for people who might be following you at shopping malls and report them if they are suspicious.”
