TUT boosts victims of domestic violence

“The mistakes you make today can actually help you make better life choices tomorrow. You need to take ownership of everything that is happening in your life.”

Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) came to the aid of Youth for Survival centre based in the Pretoria CBD recently.

TUT spokesperson Willa De Ruyter said the staff and students donated a microwave, blankets, mattresses, masks, hand sanitisers, pillows and toiletries to the centre.

De Ruyter said that hand sanitisers were produced by TUT’s technology station in chemicals.

Youth for Survival CEO Dr Dundai Nyamutinga said the shelter appreciated the work TUT had done, especially in visiting, conducting a needs assessment and remembering to assist the women who were victims of domestic violence.

“All the things that were donated will be of great help to the 100 women who stay in this shelter.”

The women who were treated with supplies were also offered career guidance by TUT and given some motivation.

Public speaker, entrepreneur and TUT alumna Lebogang Mokgosi delivered a motivational address, advising the women to start working on their dreams.

Mokgosi said young women should take control of their own destiny and not allow anyone to determine their way to success and growth.

“The fact that some days of your life might be darker than others doesn’t mean that it is the end of the road or your opportunities. Every new day brings new opportunities with it.

“The mistakes you make today can actually help you make better life choices tomorrow. You need to take ownership of everything that is happening in your life,” she said.

Dr Nyamutinga said: “We believe that the women have been given very useful career information and what they could expect if they decide to study at TUT.

“We trust that they share the information and that many of them will take further action through enrolling for some of TUT’s programmes.”
