‘Constructive critic’ of the Tshwane metro mourned

“He was a constructive critic of the municipality, especially on matters relating to service delivery and never abused his radio platform to settle personal scores when the City fell short of expectations, even when he was personally affected.”

The Tshwane metro this week said it was mourning the loss of a “constructive critic and supporter” following the death of a well-known radio presenter.

Radio legend Bob Mabena died of cardiac arrest on Monday.

“We would like to join millions of South Africans to express our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children, colleagues and the entire Power FM family.”

Mabena was a born resident of Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria and later settled in Centurion.

Tshwane head administrator Mpho Nawa said “Mabena was a keen supporter of the metro and participated in many events aimed at enhancing the image of the municipality”.

“He was a constructive critic of the municipality, especially on matters relating to service delivery. He never abused his radio platform to settle personal scores when the metro fell short of expectations, even when he was personally affected.”

Nawa said in 2009, the metro partnered with Mabena to host the successful Metro FM music awards and three years later he compèred the state of the city address gala dinner with aplomb.

“In 2015, Mabena played a starring role in the #ThumbsUpTshwane campaign aimed at highlighting the role that celebrities played in broader society and how they could help to enhance and improve the metro’s image and profile.”

“Bob worked for various stations in Johannesburg, including his recent employer, Power FM, but remained rooted in the metro of his birth. He loved Tshwane and participated in many activities hosted by the municipality.”

He said the residents of Tshwane, who constituted the majority of callers to various Power FM shows, would sorely miss him.

“A legend that was adept at deejaying, singing and anchoring a current affairs show has fallen, but his memory will longer on for generations to come. May his departed soul find eternal peace,” Nawa said.
