Be careful when wearing a branded mask – police
“Community members are warned to be vigilant at all times as these people are also wearing masks and cannot be easily identified."
Police in Ga-Rankuwa believe criminals are now targeting residents wearing brand name masks, hijacking them.
According to police, perpetrators would drive next to their victims, call the victim by the brand name on his or her face mask.
The false familiarity is then said to lure the victim into the hijacking.
“Immediately when the victim stops, the perpetrators point their firearms at them and then hijacks them,” said captain Matthews Nkoadi.
Nkoadi said police are discouraging all residents from wearing branded face masks especially when driving.
“Do not stop when you are flagged by an unknown person on the road.”

He said police have also been informed that there is a silver-grey Polo 8, with three armed occupants, hijacking cars around Ga-Rankuwa and Mabopane.
“Community members are warned to be vigilant at all times as these people are also wearing masks and cannot be easily identified.”
He added there was also a white Golf 6 with unknown registration that is targeting ladies in the early hours of the morning.
“The driver offers them a lift and then he suddenly comes up with a story about the car being broken. He asks the lady to help him push it. If she refuses, he robs her.
“Anyone who might have information that can assist to apprehend these criminals is requested to contact us on our Crime Stop number, 08600-10111 or My SAPS app.”
