300 arrested in capital city operations

Of the 35 people arrested, 24 of them were caught in Hammanskraal on Saturday evening.

A total of 302 people were arrested during city-wide operations conducted by police at the weekend.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said the operations were led by Major-General Hilda Mohajane.

“A total of 19 motorists found themselves behind bars after they were nabbed for drunk driving with 12 of them arrested in Mamelodi East during a roadblock that was conducted on Saturday, 26 September, and 31 other motorists were fined for contravening the road traffic act. They were issued with fines which amounted to R14 350,” he said.

“During the high-density operations 13 taverns were closed, six shebeen owners were fined for selling liquor without licences and 35 people were arrested for drinking liquor in public,” Shibambo said.

“A total of 761 people and 322 vehicles were searched during the operations, while four of those searched were found in possession of drugs and the fifth was found in possession of dagga,” Shibambo said, adding another was found in possession of a suspected stolen vehicle in Mamelodi.

“The suspects that were arrest for serious crimes such as burglary, theft, assaults and attempted murder, among others, will appear in various magistrate’s courts around Tshwane on Monday.”

Mohajane applauded the efforts of the officers which were aimed at making the city safer.

She also encouraged officers to make gender-based violence a priority to protect vulnerable groups in society to ensure they were adequately protected at all times.
