Search for mother after new-born baby found dumped in north

The ‘two-hour-old’ baby was found wrapped in a cloth in a plastic bag

Sinoville police are searching for the mother of a newly-born baby who was found dumped in a plastic bag in the early hours of Friday.

The two-hours-old baby was found wrapped in a cloth inside a plastic bag at a street corner in the Pretoria North suburb.

“We have to start looking for the mother or information which could lead us to her,” police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.

“At about 05:00, police received a message notifying them of an abandoned baby at the corner of Dr Swanepoel Road and Sefako Makgatho Drive,” he said.

“Paramedics were called to the scene to check if there were any life-threatening injuries to the baby.

“Afterwards we took him to the police station and the female police officers took hold of him to keep him warm and comfortable,” Van Dyk said.

“Once all the legal documentation was completed, the baby was taken to a place of safety,” he said.

Sergeant Billivana Henrick Mbola was lauded for his role in assisting with the safe-keeping of the baby until the hand over was completed.

The investigation to look for the baby’s mother was ongoing.
