Action SA cleans Hammanskraal

“We have identified areas which are used by people to dump. Our volunteers have looked at a lot of public spaces that are currently in a bad state and we are planning to address those areas.”

Action SA party recently took to the streets to clean illegal dumping sites in Hammanskraal.

This was part of their A re sebetseng (let’s work) campaign which will be held every second week of the month, to clean illegal dumping sites around the areas that they plan to contest during the local government voting.

Action SA Gauteng convener and former acting Tshwane mayor Abel Tau said they have identified different areas around the city and local township that people are dumping illegally.

“We have identified areas which are used by people to dump. Our volunteers have looked at a lot of public spaces that are currently in a bad state and we are planning to address those areas.”

Tau urged residents to stop illegal dumping and be part of the work they were trying to do.

“Every resident who is dumping illegally must just remember they are not doing this against anyone but themselves. There’s a saying which says, cleanliness is next to godliness, I don’t see why we want to see ourselves in greatness when we do not look after the environment we live in. The simplest task is to pick up a piece of paper and put it where it belongs.”

Leader of the party Herman Mashaba encouraged residents to be responsible for their neighbourhoods.

“We need to create a spirit of co-operation where society can work with the government for their own neighbourhoods and that’s the whole idea behind A re sebetseng.”

He said they were hoping to do the campaign successfully as they did in Johannesburg.

“In all the municipalities that we are going to contest, even those we will not be contesting, we want to start capacitating the culture of self-reliance.”

He said they would look at increasing penalties for people who continued to dump illegally but at the same time, government has got the responsibility to provide dumping sites.

“Someone cannot dump outside their yard, there have to be some consequences. I am a strong believer in the rule of law but at the same time, if you want people to respect your laws, the laws have to be fair because if they are not, there’s no way people will abide by those laws.”
