North police conduct crime prevention operations
“We will be doing them every week but not only on Fridays, we will do them at any given day."
Dube police and various law enforcers from Moretele local municipality held a multi-disciplinary operation in Kromkuil and Winterveldt recently.
The operation was focused on roadblocks, illegal shebeens, spaza shops and places that sold second-hand goods.
Warrant Officer Tembi Nowathe said because the area was rural, most of the spaza shop owners did not monitor their stock, resulting in the community being sold expired goods.
“The area is full of old people, they usually send young children to go to make purchases. They can’t tell if the items are fresh or expired. This results in health problems for many in the area. We found another shop that was so dirty, it could not be a place to sell food.

“The shop owners keep these expired goods in their shops and sell them instead of putting them aside and returning them to the manufacturer to get new ones.”
Nowathe said spaza shop owners were fined by the health inspectors and their merchandise was confiscated.
An illegal shebeen was also closed down and fined during the operation.
“We took all the alcohol and the person was fined R1 500.”
Nowathe said they also conducted roadblocks where people were fined for driving without a licence and drinking in public.
She said the station will continue to have weekly operations.
