16 illegal liquor outlets shut down, hundreds arrested across Pretoria

Arrests were made for a number of crimes including attempted murder, rape, malicious damage to property, theft, armed robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicles, house robbery and driving under the influence of liquor.

More than 300 people were arrested and 16 illegal liquor outlets shut down during police operations across Tshwane over the weekend.  

Several illegal firearms were also recovered.  

The operations were part of “intensified high-density crime combating and rural safety operations set by the service”, according to police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe.  

“Ninety-three arrests were made in the north of Pretoria, 75 in the east, 70 in the west and 57 suspects were arrested in the central area,” she said.

  Alleged offences ranged from attempted murder, rape, malicious damage to property, theft, armed robbery, possession of stolen motor vehicle, house robbery and driving under the influence of liquor.

Several arrests were also made for alleged theft out of motor vehicles, housebreaking, shoplifting and theft, business robbery, public drinking and operating a business without legal documents.  

The operation also saw liquor outlets raided in areas such as Temba, Erasmia, Atteridgeville, Soshanguve, Brooklyn, Sunnyside and Mamelodi.  

“In Mamelodi East, a man was arrested and charged with dealing in drugs. He was found in possession of bags with drugs.’’  

“Roadblocks were set up in various areas within Tshwane over the weekend. More than 820 vehicles and 2 012 persons were searched. Aarto fines were also issued.”  

Tshwane district commissioner Major General Hilda Mohajane said more arrests will follow heading into the festive season.  

“Residents should expect more of integrated high-density deployment of various law enforcement agencies.”

  All arrested suspects are expected to appear in various regional and magistrate’s courts throughout Tshwane soon.
