Moot water leak repaired after four months

“Issues surrounding poor service delivery are not been given immediate attention from the metro.”

Tshwane metro has finally repaired a water pipe leakage after four months, in Malherbe Street, Capital Park.

Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the cause of the problem was not known as the water pipe was underground.

“Our suspicion is that the pipe might be corroded, given that we have old or ageing infrastructure,” said Mashigo.

“The water leak has been reported as urgent work and is scheduled for crucial repairs,” he said.

Former DA ward 1 councillor Elma Nel said the water leak had become a problem for many residents in the area.

“We have reported this leak since June, and metro officials only came to investigate but have not repaired the leak,” said Nel.

“In Malherbe Street, a pothole has been formed due to a pipe that burst at the start of the nationwide lockdown,” she said.

Nel said the metro repaired the pipe by digging in the middle of the road but never closed the hole thereafter.

“As DA ward councillors, we make sure that the metro does get every complaint we receive from residents in the area but the metro does not help us immediately,” said Nel.

“Issues surrounding poor service delivery are not been given immediate attention by the metro,” she said.

Capital Park sub-sector CPF chairperson Cor Snel said at the time contractors were digging to install fibre cables in Malherbe Street, they also reported the pipe that had been leaking for four months.

“On 29 September, a resident reported the leak again to the metro through the call centre, giving them the reference number,” said Snel.

Capital Park resident Hennie de bruin told Rekord the water leak was a concern for him because at a time other people were in need of water, this pipe had been leaking for months.
