Police warn residents of stolen or hijacked vehicle scam
"The scammer pretends to be a police officer informing the victim that his or her car is recovered by police and they must pay an amount so it can be towed to their residence.”

Ga-Rankuwa police are warning victims of hijacked and stolen cars to be aware of a new scam making the rounds.
Scammers will call the victim saying the vehicle has been recovered but this is a lie, according to police spokesperson Shimi Tsheole.
“The scammer pretends to be a police officer informing the victim that his or her car has been recovered and is being kept by police,” Tsheole said.
“They then claim that the victim’s vehicle will be towed to his or her residential place.
“The bogus cop will then smooth talk the victim into paying a certain amount that a towing company will demand to speed up this process.”
Tsheole said the unsuspecting victim then receives a second call from someone who claims to be from the towing company.
“The victim will then be scammed into paying money into a certain account before the vehicle can be delivered.”

He added it was still not clear how the perpetrators get hold of the victim’s number.
“Ga-Rankuwa police strongly advice our community not to fall for this scam.
“Should they find themselves in this situation, kindly contact the investigating officer of the docket concerned or visit the police station.”
