Beloved Moot granny dies
Martha Marais made headlines in 2019 when she was tied to a chair at the Mamelodi regional hospital by staff.
The beloved Moot in Pretoria granny, who made headlines after staff reportedly tied her to a chair at the Mamelodi Regional Hospital, has died.
“Ouma Martha Marais died last night [Friday],” family spokesperson Virginia Keppler said, adding the family was heartbroken as she was a good mother and grandmother.
Keppler said Marais died in her sleep at the Eersterust Association for Community Health centre.
“She died a few hours after visiting her children and celebrating her son, Veron’s birthday,” she said.
“Ouma Marais will always be remembered as someone who took on the health department.
“This tiny little woman didn’t just bow out, she made sure that she fought,” Keppler said.
The then 76-year-old made headlines in May last year when she was photographed lying on the floor, tied to a steel bench at the hospital.
Marais was admitted to the hospital as a patient.
Shortly after her ordeal and discharge from the hospital, Marais told Rekord she was “glad to get away from there”.
“When I got home, I wasn’t in the mood for anything, I just wanted to sleep in my own bed,” she said at the time.
