Hero Laudium volunteer saves two women trapped in home blaze

“The sister of the elderly woman rushed in to try to save her but also got trapped”

Laudium disaster management volunteer Muhammed Dockrat was hailed a hero for saving two women during a fire on Monday

The house fire killed an elderly woman (74) and left two other women injured.

“When I arrived with the team, we were informed that there were people trapped in the house. We quickly tried to extinguish the fire while some of us rushed inside to rescue the women,” Dockrat told Rekord. “

The first time I went in, we carried a 52-year-old woman from the house to safety. She had suffered severe injuries and had to be taken to hospital. After that, the sister of the elderly woman (the deceased) rushed in to try to save her sister but also got trapped,” he said

Dockrat said the team went in again to rescue the sister.

“She couldn’t see where she was due to the smoke but luckily we saw her. She was safely escorted out of the burning house. The woman had moderate injuries and was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Unfortunately, we couldn’t rescue the elderly woman, who was later declared dead.”

Tshwane emergency services spokesman Charles Mabaso said when the fire department arrived on the scene, the house was engulfed in flames. He said it took emergency services personnel “hours” to put out the flames.

“A burned and charred body of an elderly woman was recovered by firefighters around 14:05,” Mabaso told Rekord. He said the cause of the fire has not been fully determined yet, and an investigation was underway.
