United face Leopards in League opener

United are looking sharp having advanced to the last four of the MTN 8 after beating TTM FC in a five-goal-thriller in Venda last week.

SuperSport United will kick off the DStv Premiership this weekend, when they welcome Black Leopards FC in Tshwane.

The match will take place at the Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday, at 20:15.

United are looking sharp having advanced to the last four of the MTN8 after beating newcomers TTM FC in a five-goal-thriller in Venda last week.

For the 2020/21 season, United beefed up their squad after securing the services of four quality players.

The players are goalkeeper George Chigova, Mpho Mathebula, Keenan Phillips and Lucky Mohomi.

Phillips and Mohomi debuted for Matsatsantsa this past weekend, in the quarterfinal of the MTN8 Cup against TTM.

The pair came off of the bench for Grant Kekana and Thami Gabuza respectively at the beginning of the second half.

Aside from the four players, Matsatsantsa has also brought in new blood from their academy.

SuperSport academy coach Godfrey Mosoetsa said he was impressed seeing a total of eight former academy players taking part in the MTN8 for different teams.

“It was such a pleasure to see these players playing against each other and the memories this brought to us was great. We must also acknowledge that the success of these players has been achieved because of their immense talent and hard work of their teammates like Kamohelo Mokotjo and Philani Khwela, and the coaches like Kwanele Kopo and Kaitano Tembo,” said Mosoetsa.

Jesse Donn, Keenan Phillips and Mpho Mathebula are some of the academy players who were recently promoted to the first team.

After Saturday’s game, United will play their second league match on the road against the KwaZulu-Natal based side Golden Arrows later this month at the Claremont Township’s Sugar Ray Xulu stadium on Wednesday night.

Last season, the Pretoria side finished 5th on the log but won the MTN8 trophy.
