WATCH: Successful virtual Centurion book club born from lockdown
We realised how much the older generation depends on the younger generation."
After approximately six months of the national lockdown and access to limited reading material, the older citizens in Centurion decided to take matters into their own hands.
The Centurion book club was started by a group of avid elderly readers after they realised how much the older generation depends on the younger generation.
“We also realised how much book clubs contribute to our social skills, critical reading habits and overall mental wellbeing. That is when we decided, enough is enough,” said book club member Andre de Villiers.

The group of people who form part of this book club usually meet up at the Lyttelton library, something they had to change as the library is still closed.
“What a wonderful thing it is to see how intertwined the older and younger generations are. Millenials – as they are called – assisted the older citizens of our city to be proficient in Zoom and YouTube, something we otherwise would never have learned,” said De Villiers.
After putting their newly acquired skills to the test, the Centurion book club and its members conducted two virtual book club meetings.
“What a successful way of doing this during such an uncertain time. I discussed Kas Wepener’s book, Die Slaghuis,” De Villiers said.

In September, Mimie de Vries discussed the fantasy writer Carina Stander’s books, Die Bergengel and Die Wonderwese.

“Even in the face of certain times, we really feel blessed to be able to still see each other, do what we love, which is to read and discuss magnificent books. Social distancing is here and we respect it, it’s just wonderful to be able to do the book club virtually these days,” De Villiers concluded.
