‘Drive-by shooter’ arrested after tense negotiations

"The suspect came to the police station with a friend to hand himself over, but then threatened to shoot himself."

It took about four hours of tense negotiations to talk a 34-year-old man out of shooting himself outside the Mamelodi East police station on Friday afternoon.

The man, who threatened to shoot himself, was wanted in connection with a drive-by shooting last week in which a woman died and a man was wounded in Ga-Rankuwa.

“The man came to the station with a friend to hand himself over after he learnt that he was linked to the shooting,” said police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi.

“The suspect had the firearm allegedly used to commit the crime on him.

“When they arrived at the front of the police station gate at around 16:00, he decided to commit suicide. His friend then quickly informed the police; whereby, the process of negotiating began.”

The man eventually surrendered to police and he was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Nkoadi said a 9mm pistol and ammunition were confiscated from the man.

He added the man also faced a murder case.

Nkoadi said the man’s alleged victims were apparently walking along the main road on Tuesday 3 November when a white car stopped and opened fire, hitting them in their upper bodies before the car then sped off.

“The woman succumbed to her injuries on the scene while the man was rushed to George Mukhari hospital for treatment.”

The suspect will appear in the Mamelodi magistrate’s court for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

He is expected to also appear in the Ga-Rankuwa magistrate’s court for murder.
