Traffic relief expected for north motorists

The intermodal transport facility currently being constructed along Rachel de Beer Street would include a taxi holding facility and parking space for commuters boarding the A Re Yeng bus service.

Motorists in the north of Pretoria using Rachel de Beer Street towards the CBD can expect better traffic as a lane, which has been closed for months, has now been reopened for motor vehicles.

“The lane was opened up on Friday afternoon,” site agent for Vharanani properties Neil Kotze said.

Vharanani properties is responsible for constructing the long-awaited intermodal transport facility located in Pretoria north.

This transport facility would include, among others, a taxi holding facility and a parking facility for members of the public to park their vehicles when they board the A Re Yeng bus.

“We’d actually also like to remove most of the yellow barriers, which are an eyesore, before we go on holiday for December,” Kotze said.

He anticipated that most of the roadworks they are responsible for would be completed within the first quarter of 2021.

There were, however, still a number of things they had to complete before they wrapped up with the project.

During a public meeting at Danie Malan primary school in 2019, Tshwane Bus Rapid Transit team member Lloyd Moti said their plans for the bus service would span over five years, as they built routes from Wonderboom station to Pretoria station.

Another station, Hector Pieterson, was expected to be completed by 2021.

Moti also revealed the broader 15-year plan, which included extending the network from Kopanong in Soshanguve, to Atteridgeville via Akasia, Rachel de Beer or Gerrit Maritz, Paul Kruger or Mansfield streets, Pretoria station, the city centre, Lynnwood, Mamelodi and Mahube Valley.
