Thieves steal two cars from same housing complex
"We believe that the thieves were only there to steal from the cars. But when they found the remote in one of the vehicles, they took their chance to steal both cars."
Police suspect thieves used an owner’s gate remote to steal two cars from a housing complex in the Moot over the weekend.
“We believe that the thieves were only there to steal from the cars. But when they found the remote in one of the vehicles, they took their chance to steal both cars,” said police spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt.
One of the cars, a blue Renault Clio, was recovered after it crashed into a tree at CR Swart Drive in Queenswood following a brief chase with police officers.
Breedt said vehicle owners should always ensure their vehicle is locked, even though the owner might feel it was not always necessary as the car was parked in a gated security access area.
“Caretakers should have regular meetings with residents to give feedback on security issues such as when residents misplace their remote controls and reporting suspicious persons and vehicle thefts.
“With the festive season around the corner, vehicle- and property-related crime have a tendency to increase,” Breedt said.
He added that caretakers should ensure there is enough lighting in the complex, especially in front of the gate and inside the complex.
“When entering the gate – whether you are a visitor or an owner – wait for the gate to close.
“Never leave valuable items such as electronic devices or handbags in your vehicle overnight.
“We have received recent reports of motorcycles that got stolen when owners are on holiday. Make sure it is parked in a locked garage,” he concluded.
Breedt pleaded to the community to assist the Moot police in protecting their valuables during this festive season by reporting suspicious persons or vehicles and illegal activities to them by using the emergency number 10111 or the toll-free Crime Stop number on 08600-10111.
Residents can also SMS any information regarding crime related incidents to 33221.
