Five shebeen owners arrested in Laudium, Erasmia

Police said they were found to be selling liquor illegally.

Police were out in full force during an operation in Laudium and Erasmia on Friday night, which led to the arrests of five shebeen owners.

The local CPF, Laudium disaster management and local security companies all took part as well as local ward councillor Farouk Essop.

The operation sought to curb violent crimes in Erasmia and Laudium after hotspots areas were identified, said police spokesperson Sergeant Simon Chokoe.

“During the operations, five shebeens were closed for operating without licences and alcohol was confiscated.

“The owners of the shebeens were immediately arrested and issued with fines,” said Chokoe.

Both Erasmia and Laudium police station commanders welcomed the partnership between the police and the community.
