Taxi driver gunned down, two passengers wounded in north shooting

"The motive of the attack is unknown but is suspected to be related to taxi violence.”

Soshanguve taxi commuters have raised concerns about their safety following a shooting incident on Monday, which claimed the life of a taxi driver, while two passengers were wounded.

Police spokesperson Constable Portia Sebone said it was alleged that five suspects in a white Audi A4 that was parked in Umphafa Road in Soshanguve block VV near a shopping complex, opened fire on the victims and fled the scene.

“The deceased sustained multiple gunshots wounds and was certified dead on the scene and the other two victims who were injured were taken to hospital.”

A taxi marshal who spoke on condition of anonymity said he had been very close to the deceased.

He said the incident had made him fear for his safety as this could happen to anyone.

“He used to help me when I have problems, be it financial or emotional. I used to wash his cars and we were very close.

“I’m scared because I do not know if I might be next. These attackers came from nowhere. This taxi violence is very scary because these people are fighting an ongoing war.”

A man who runs a business nearby, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was on his way back from the CBD when he saw the body of a man lying on the ground.

“When I arrived the incident had already happened but this thing also affects us as we also use taxis. I live in constant fear because my business is also near where this thing happened.”

A commuter who was waiting for a taxi nearby said the shooting incident heightened her fears when using taxis.

“Taxis are the only mode of transportation available for me. I used taxis for work and sometimes I take taxis with my children. Passengers were also shot at yesterday,” she said.

“What if it was me? What would have my children done without me?

“I know nothing will be done for the passengers’ safety but because we also depend on taxis, there’s nothing much I can do. I will just have to pray that something like that does not happen to me.”

Sebone said the motive of the attack was unknown but is suspected to be related to taxi violence.

“Soshanguve police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. The police are requesting members of the community who might have noticed these incidents to contact Soshanguve SAPS on 012-730-1300 or My SAPS App.”
