New MMC tasked with overseeing stalled local housing project
The project to build 40 RDP houses was funded through proceeds of the sale of the so-called ‘mayoral mansion’ in 2017.
The newly elected Tshwane mayor has vowed to save a local housing project which sought to build 40 RDP houses in Atteridgeville, in the west of Pretoria. The Tshwane housing project, which sought to provide houses for vulnerable residents, had effectively ground to a halt in March. The reason, according to Tshwane mayor Randall Williams, was the dissolution of the municipal council. “MMC Mpho Mehlape-Zimu has been tasked with saving the project,” Williams said in a statement.
“The project was funded through proceeds of the sale of the so-called ‘mayoral mansion’ in 2017. In 2018, houses were allocated to 40 families who were due to move into their new homes next month.”
“However, their joy had been cut short by the deployment of the illegitimate ANC administrators who failed to provide proper oversight and hold the project managers to account.” Former head administrator Mpho Nawa dismissed these claims. “The ANC administrators were far more impactful than what the DA has done in three years,” Nawa said. He said he will be instituting blacklisting processes against the contractors who worked on the project, vowing “they will never do business with the city again”. “I will also engage with National Treasury to assess whether a countrywide ban from government procurement can be implemented against the contractors.” MMC Mehlape-Zimu, who conducted a site inspection of the project, has expressed confidence that the beneficiaries will occupy their new homes early next year. *Please note the photo in the story has been amended, as the incorrect photo was used.
