Kekana’s ‘thunderbolt’ nominated for international award

He dedicated the nomination to his former teammate Anele Ngcongca who passed away in a car accident this week.

Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder and captain Hlompho Kekana was nominated for the Puskás award this week.

The FIFA Puskás Award is given to the player judged to have scored the “most beautiful” goal of the calendar year.

Kekana becomes the first South African to be nominated for the award twice. In 2016, he was nominated after he scored a long range goal against Cameroon in the 2017 AFCON qualifiers.

This year, he was nominated for his strike against Cape Town City in August 2019. The same goal won the PSL Goal of the Season. The Puskás awards goes to the player that gets the most votes out of the top 10 nominees.

The 35-year-old midfielder will have to fend off competition from the likes of Luis Suarez and Son Heung-min to win the 2020 FIFA Puskás award.
