Two long-term convicts escape from Kgosi Mampuru II prison

The escapees are Thabo Zacharia Muyambo from Mozambique, who serving a life sentence for 21 counts of various crimes including rape, robbery and kidnapping; and Zimbabwean Johannes Chauke, who serving 20 years for housebreaking offences.

Two convicts serving long jail terms in the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre in Tshwane have escaped.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) launched a manhunt following the escape on Wednesday morning.

Spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said: “The escapees are Thabo Zacharia Muyambo from Mozambique, who was serving a life sentence for 21 counts of various crimes including rape, robbery and kidnapping and Johannes Chauke of Zimbabwe, who was serving 20 years for housebreaking offences.”

Nxumalo could not confirm to Rekord what time did the two men had escaped, however, “they escaped in the early hours of this morning”.

“The two are still at large and members of the emergency support team from Correctional Services are working closely with the South African Police Service who are hot on their heels and these escapees shall be brought back behind bars.”

He said the DCS had also initiated an internal investigation into the escape.

Nxumalo said the DCS was investigating the circumstances and objects that they may have used to flee the Tshwane based Correctional Centre.

Nxumalo said the members of the public were urged to contact the nearest police station should they come into contact with them.
