Eersterust murder sentencing set to take place tomorrow

This trial has been going on for so long and one of the many chapters that we as a family face will finally come to an end tomorrow.

The sentencing of a man found guilty of murdering Eersterust resident Dean Jafta is expected tomorrow.

This as Mark Booysen, also known as “Billy the Kid”, is set to appear before the North Gauteng High Court.

Jafta’s body was found with multiple shot wounds in an open veld in the Midrand area on 25 May 2017.

He was reported missing a few days earlier on 19 May after his parents could not reach him on his cellphone.

When he failed to return home that evening, his family got very worried.

Phone records showed that he was on his way to meet a friend on the day of his disappearance.

It was only in November 2018, more than a year and half later, that the Jafta family discovered that the body found was indeed Dean’s because police had initially been unable to establish his identity.

Father of the deceased, Denzil Jafta said his son’s body was not only found with six bullet wounds, but that he was “badly assaulted” as well.

Denzil said that there is still a lot that will be unfolded subsequent to the sentencing.

“It has been an emotional journey for us,” he said.

“This trial has been going on for very long and one of the many chapters that we as a family face will finally come to an end on Friday.

“I buried my mother on Saturday and tomorrow we will face Billy in court.

“There is still a lot of unanswered questions surrounding the circumstances around Dean’s death,” said Denzil.

The father added that his son was not a bad kid.

“My son was a humble, loyal and respectful human being.

“He just mingled with the wrong friends.

“He had a bright future planned ahead. He finished matric and planned to start with his studies,” he said.

Dean would have celebrated his 24th birthday this year.

Booysen was supposed to be sentenced in August, but it was postponed because of Covid-19.
