Search continues for mom months after abandoning new-born

The new-born baby was found abandoned in a plastic bag shortly after birth in October.

Sinoville police are still searching for the mother of a now four-month-old baby after he was found dumped in a plastic bag shortly after birth in October 2020.

“While investigations are ongoing, we appeal to anyone with information which assist us in tracking his mother,” spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said.

The baby was found in the early hours of Friday, 2 October by three homeless men a short distance from the Engen Montana Crossing convenience centre.

The baby was placed at the Rock of Hope place of safety in Magalieskruin.

Mientjie Prozesky, co-founder of the place of safety, said he had since grown into such a sweetheart since he first arrived at her and her husband, also a co-founder, Wouter’s home despite him losing a lot of blood through his unbound umbilical cord at birth.

“He’s very strong and healthy. He also loves kisses and cuddles,” she said.

Prozesky further said social workers were in the process of getting adoptive parents for the baby.

Giving his account of how he stumbled upon and found the newborn, one of the three men, Daniel Matemane, said he stumbled upon the plastic bag which the baby was left in thinking it could be clothes which he could sell for some income.

However, he got more than he bargained for. Upon opening the plastic bag, he heard a cry.

“Shocked, I walked away, but shortly afterwards I went back,” Matemane recalled.

The approximately two-hours-old baby was reportedly found lying on his stomach, still covered in blood and afterbirth.

The two other men who were with Matemane, Sylvester Mmakala and “Gray” then recalled seeing a suspicious-looking woman walking in opposite direction as they walked to the petrol station.

Mmakala and Matemane reportedly ran in the direction they saw the woman walking in. Gray remained at the garage with the newborn baby boy.

“I suspected this woman was up to something, but I didn’t know for sure. Unfortunately we lost track of her,” Matemane told Rekord.

At the garage, petrol attendant Tshifiwa Nduma had roped in early morning customer Zelda du Plessis in for assistance. They reportedly waited for police and paramedics for more than an hour after they first reported the situation.

She reportedly offered her jacket to cover the baby as he was getting cold while also calling the police repeatedly.

“When Nduma told me about the discovery of the baby and asked me to assist, I jumped out of my car immediately and tried to call the crisis centre and police,” du Plessis said.
